Making our own kind of music is really what Music Therapy is about. Music provides a voice when for whatever reason a spoken one is unavailable or insufficient. When you engage in music therapy, a skilled trained music therapist uses music with you to open communication, and provides opportunities to develop creativity and other skills. You don't need to bring any prior experience of music making - we believe that what you need is there waiting for the therapist to nourish it.
Music therapy is evidence based particularly in the fields of dementia, autism, developmental delay, emotional regulation, anxiety - some of the typical reasons for referrals to music therapy.
At Capo Music Therapy, we offer music therapy services tailored for children, young people, and adults. Our sessions are client led which means we work at your pace to overcome challenges, foster growth and emotional wellbeing. We work in various settings including schools, colleges, and care homes.
We have a lot of fun! In a music therapy session we create a welcoming safe space and start with "Hello". Depending on the reason for referral we use a range of musical instruments like djembe drums, tambourines, keyboards, ukuleles to encourage expression and joint musical experiences. Through creative processes like this we can acknowledge unexpressed emotions, we can create opportunities to try out social skills or support the work of other interventions such as speech and language therapy.
One to one and group sessions customized to meet individual needs, allowing for personal and emotional growth. In schools for example we can work in small groups up to 10 across a term on specifics such as anxiety or emotionally based school avoidance.
Our Masters degree registered music therapists and drama therapists are equipped to provide exceptional care across various settings. Often specialising their work towards particular areas such as autism, dementia or modalities such as song-writing, improvisation and storytelling. Regular CPD and supervision keeps us focussed and aware of new developments.
Evidence-based results demonstrating improvement in mental health, communication skills, and emotional resilience are communicated through the client and their teams. Sometimes such as in the case of dementia, success is evidenced in the reduction of symptoms such as anxiety, aggression and depression.
